Worship Ministries at PortNaz is an exciting place to be involved! Over 75 musicians come together on a weekly basis to help lead our congregation in worship through vocal music, choir, and instrumental ministries. Additionally, our department offers a variety of dramatic opportunities, as well as an extensive number of media ministries. If you have musical, dramatic, or technical talent, this is the place for you to serve!
Ministry Opportunities
This is the Worship Ministries Department’s primary ensemble. It is made up of approximately 50 talented singers from all walks of life and is the backbone of our vocal ministries. They sing a variety of styles from contemporary pop sounds to traditional sacred literature. Choral involvement determines eligibility for worship teams and opportunities to perform special music. Directed by Colene Wiens, the Praise Choir sings approximately twice monthly in worship services and meets for rehearsal every Thursday evening from 7:00 – 8:30 PM in the Worship Center.
These 7 different vocal ensembles are made up of 5 – 6 members each and help lead our congregational worship at both AM services and the PM service. Auditions are held each year in early August. They rehearse every Thursday evening from 6:00 – 7:00 PM in the Worship Center.
The Praise Band is a dynamic group of musicians dedicated to lifting up our Lord through instrumental music. They are a vital part of all three weekly worship services and play preludes and special music on a regular basis. The Band is made up of a rhythm section including piano, keyboard, organ, bass and lead guitar, rhythm guitar, drums and percussion. Also included are various wind instruments, adding variety and character to the music that is played. The band rehearses Thursday evenings from 5:00 - 6:30 PM in the Worship Center.
Our 3 handbell choirs perform regularly throughout the 
year and at special events. We have an adult handbell ensemble, a senior ladies ensemble and a children’s handbell/tone chime choir. Also we have several octaves of tone chimes that delight young and old alike.
Ensembles
We currently feature 2 different vocal ensembles that perform special music in services. Mixed Ensemble is an all-vocal group that is made up of musical veterans. Praise Ensemble is a newer group accompanied by a live band. A variety of additional vocal groups are formed throughout the year on an "as needed" basis.
Many of our members express their worship through media. These dedicated “behind the scenes” individuals are a vital part of our worship experiences. They serve in video, audio recording, live sound engineering, theatrical lighting and visual media.
There are several opportunities for individuals to participate in drama. Sketches are occaisionally featured in our worship services, and there are additional opportunities for drama during our Holy Week services in addition to our annual holiday production, The Majesty of Christmas.
The Majesty of Christmas is our annual holiday production, presented the 2nd weekend in December. In its fourth year, it plays for an audience of approximately 3,000 over a run of three evenings. It is a fully-staged, Broadway-style dramatic musical production featuring a live orchestra and over 200 cast and crew. The largest holiday performance in Porterville, The Majesty of Christmas is a heart-warming, treasured event meant to be our Christmas gift to the community as we proclaim the Good News of Jesus Christ.
